Founded in 1960, The University of Sussex - one of the then ‘new universities’ - was set in parkland near the village of Falmer, halfway between Brighton and Lewes. In the autumn term of 1963 there were plenty of musicians amongst the fresh intake of students and, within a couple of months, they had grouped themselves into two main units: a piano trio and a pop band. Surprisingly there were not enough good drummers to go around and, as a consequence, Grant Serpell played in both The Jazz Trio and The Baskervilles, the University pop band. Affinity had its origins when three science students - pianist Lynton Naiff (studying mathematics), drummer Grant Serpell (studying chemistry), and double bass player John Morton ‘Nick’ Nicholas (studying physics and philosophy) - formed the US Jazz Trio. One year later another science student - Mo Foster (studying Physics) who had originally played bass guitar in his school band, The Tradewinds, and who had briefly played double bass with the short-lived US Jazz Quartet - adapted to playing drums for the trio when Grant Serpell graduated. MUSICIANS LYNTON NAIFF, MICK NICHOLAS, MO FOSTER, LINDA HOYLE
