Paul Di’Anno is synonymous with one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all-time – Iron Maiden. The front man for 3 years, Di’Anno’s career has seen him perform as a solo artist and as a member of bands such as Battlezone, Gogmagog and, as is the case here, the self-titled Di’Anno. Recorded at the Camden Palace in 1984 as part of the “Live From London” series, Di’Anno delivers a monster performance featuring Tales Of The Unexpected, The Runner and Flaming Heart. Born Paul Andrews in England in 1956, Paul Di’Anno’s influence and efforts in making Iron Maiden one of the most recognised names in music cannot be underestimated. It was his vocal power that first brought Maiden to the forefront of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. Hired as a replacement singer by his friend and bassist Steve Harris, Di’Anno and the rest of the band had their work cut out for them, as late ‘70s Britain was in the grip of punk rock. The release of their eponymous album in 1980 catapulted the band onto the world stage and the record became an instant classic. This was followed in 1981 by Killers, another commercially successful release but it proved to be Di’Anno’s final album with the band. Amid rumours of cocaine abuse and heavy drinking, and the cancellation of gigs on tour, Di’Anno left the band and in 1983 resurfaced as the lead singer of the self-titled band Di’Anno (the band was originally called Lonewolf but were forced to change it after a dispute with another group called Lone Wolf). In 1985 Di’Anno started work with a group called Gogmagog, the brainchild of record producer and DJ Jonathan King. Despite its members pedigree (ex-members of Iron Maiden, Whitesnake and Def Leppard) and some critical acclaim, the group failed make an impact and disbanded. Di’Anno was undeterred and joined or formed several more bands during the late ‘80s and early ‘90s – Battlezone, Praying Mantis and Killers, all with varying degrees of success. By the beginning of the new millennium Di’Anno had based himself in Brazil, working on his music and forming new bands including Nomad and RockFellas. In February 2011 Di’Anno was convicted of benefit fraud in the UK and sentenced to 9 months imprisonment, serving 2 before he was released.
