It's hard enough to keep from getting bogged down by tradition, never mind establishing an individual artistic voice. Deborah Coleman seems to have her own solution to that problem: throw tradition out the window. On WHERE BLUE BEGINS the formidable guitarist/vocalist takes the considerable lessons she's learned from the blues and applies them to a fresh-sounding musical stew that includes rock, funk, blues, R&B and more. A staunch modernist, her slide work is more Duane Allman than Elmore James, and her choice of material is eclectic to say the least, ranging from Jane Siberry ("Hain't It Funny") to Louis Jordan ("They Raided the Joint"). Blues purists probably won't come anywhere near this album, and they'll never know what they're missing.
