World Music Portraits is a series of films profiling some of the most popular and influential world music artists of the contemporary scene. Each film shows the artist in performance and ventures back to their home soil to explore the cultural roots of their music and the formative influences on their art. Shot with state of the art production values, each film captures both informal musial moments as well as concert performances. Salif Keita has been one of the most popular and versatile World music artists from the time he embarked on a solo career fifteen years ago. This portrait treats us to Salif's wide ranging repertoire, from spellbinding intimate performances of traditional Malian music on acoustic guitar to concerts in Denmark and France that showcase his innovations in fusing Malian roots with jazz, funk, Europop and R & B. Salif takes us on the road from his current home outside of Paris back to Mali, walking us through the ruins of the nightclub Bamaka where his first band gained fame, introducing us to the village griots who taught him Malian songs, giving an impromptu performance to a group of school children and taking us on a tour of his new recording studio. In a moving interview segment, he reveals his early struggle to come to terms with his own identity, being born albuno in a black skinned society, and how these painful early years strengthened him both as artist and person. Includes performances of many of Salif's most popular songs including "Yelen'na," "Folon," and the hugely successful "Mandjou," whcih tells the history of the Malian people. Features an improvised rehearsal session with Carlos Santana.
