Joe Zawinul A Musical Portrait, by award-winning director Mark Kidel, one of the world's leading makers of music programmes, features an illuminating documentary profile of one of the world's foremost jazz keyboard players and composers, along with an electric performance by the Zawinul Syndicate at The Point in Cardiff (Wales) in 2004. Shot in an unusually intimate manner, the film communicates powerfully the immediate excitement of jazz as a no-holds-barred, risk-embracing adventure: the shooting and editing highlight the exceptional collective improvisation and musical dialogue which characterise Zawinul's work. The cast of musicians includes Sabine Bakongo (vocals), Nathaniel Townsley III (drums), Amit Chatterjee (guitar), Linley Marthe (bass) and Manolo Badrena (percussion).
Zawinul has been a pioneer in the use of electronic keyboards, and in the combination of elements drawn from jazz, rock, African and Caribbean music. He was playing 'world music' long before the term had become a marketing catch-phrase.
