In the summer of 1983, the world famous Marquee Club in London celebrated its silver jubilee with a two-day festival of live music. As a happy coincidence it was the same year in which Man reformed after a seven-year hiatus, and the organisers were only too happy to snap them up. With a lineup of Martin Ace, Deke Leonard, Mickey Jones and John Weathers, Man perform all their hits including C’Mon, The Ride And The View and Bananas. Pinpointing Man’s musical style is a difficult task even for the most fervent of fans. From their pop-inspired beginnings performing as the rock harmony group The Bystanders, their final sound has an eclectic feel to it with influences from West Coast psychedelia, blues, prog rock and country-rock. The Welsh-based band had an initial lineup of Mickey Jones, Ray Williams, Jeff Jones, Clive John and Vic Oakley, the latter being replaced by Deke Leonard in 1968, and the changes didn’t stop there. Whilst putting the finishing touches to their second album 2 Ozs of Plastic With A Hole In The Middle, Leonard left, making way for Martin Ace to join the band. This new lineup toured Europe as the support act for Chicago, and found great popularity in Germany. In 1970 the band spent a year there, often playing 4-5 hour sessions a night but not before another change in personnel. This time it was Ray Williams and Jeff Jones who left and Terry Williams provided the new face behind the drums. The next six years saw Man touring as support to acts including Hawkwind and Frank Zappa, the release of several albums (which received mixed reviews), and of course the now ubiquitous change of members. In 1976 the band performed their final gig and proclaimed they would “never, ever, be one of those bands who reformed in a futile attempt to recapture past glories…”. Seven years later they reformed with Mickey Jones, Deke Leonard, Martin Ace and John Weathers making up the band. The “evolution” of Man has taken many forms and whilst the band’s success has ebbed and flowed, their enthusiasm and commitment to music has remained as strong as ever. They have come a long way from their early days as The Bystanders, and there is nothing to say that their future will be no less entertaining.
