The Brothers Johnson first came to the attention of the music industry as part of the band Johnson Three Plus One which included the brothers George and Louis alongside older brother Tommy and cousin Alex Weir. The band backed up touring artists such as Bobby Womack and the Supremes. George and Louis also joined Billy Preston’s backing band and while with Preston wrote the song Music In My Life. Following their departure from the Billy Preston band Quincy Jones hired George and Louis to play on his album Mellow Madness recording four of the brother’s songs into the bargain. Quincy Jones then produced the Brothers Johnson debut album Look Out For #1 in 1976 although it was the following years Right On Time which was to break the Brothers Johnson into the mainstream. Right On Time was again produced by Quincy Jones. In addition to the bands success with albums and the singles Strawberry Letter 23 and Stomp the duo also served as session musicians for a great many artists including Paul McCartney playing on McCartney’s soundtrack to the film Give My regards To Broadstreet. The Best Of Funk is a compilation album that highlights the brothers talents and shows not only why they were so popular as an act in the late seventies and beyond but also musically why the were in great demand individually as session artists in their own right.
