Singer/songwriter Jack Johnson
graduated from college with a degree in film and then
set out to capture the very images of his youth with a
captivating portrait of the surfing life he'd fallen in
love with as a kid. The result was Thicker Than Water,
this award winning film won the hearts of surfers
worldwide. But the timeless images and underlying
message of togetherness resonated way beyond the endemic
audience, much the way Jack Johnson's music does today.
Thicker Than Water won Surfer
Magazine's Video of the Year Award in 1999 for its
unique portrayal of surfers, and the beauty and impact
that a simple pursuit chasing waves can have. Today, 5
years after its release, it's still hailed by critics
around the world, which is why Johnson and his friends
Chris and Emmett Malloy have decided to release the long
awaited Collectors Edition DVD. The message is perhaps
more powerful today than ever before.
It was the success of Thicker Than
Water that paved the way for Johnson's later
achievements, like the award winning follow up film
September Sessions and his hit albums Brushfire
Fairytales and On and On that made him a household name.
In fact, his first audiences as a singer were the very
surfers he was shooting for the film, and the faces, the
places and the imagery he captured on film in Thicker
Than Water were the creative fuel that inspired all of
his later works, which is why this film, more than
anything else he's done, remains the best look into
Johnson himself.
