This dynamic live
performance captures the king of Zydeco music, Rockin' Dopsie, along
with his band, the Zydeco Twisters, recorded March 24, 1984 at the
Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans.
"In January 1988, four years
after this DVD was shot in a steamy New Orleans barroom, Alton Jay
'Rockin' Dopsie' Rubin was crowned the new 'King Of Zydeco',
following the death of the music's greatest ever named, Clifton
Chenier. As can be see here however, Dopsie had already been
dressing regally for some time (and he had in fact just appointed
himself dauphin by naming a 1987 album 'The Crowned Prince Of
Zydeco'), so perhaps it was only fitting that his majestic title
should pass to him, particularly as Chenier had himself guided
Dopsie's career some thirty-odd years earlier.
Absolutely a
“must” for connoisseurs of this type of music and a fine entry for
those who want to learn about it.
