Recently (exceedingly proudly) re-acquired internationally by USM, the AMERICAN RECORDINGS label was founded in the late 1980's (originally called Def American) by acclaimed producer and Def Jam founder Rick Rubin. Boasting Slayer, Johnny Cash, The Black Crowes and The Jayhawks, USM is proud to make these recordings available again in Australia. The Black Crowes formed in 1989 around the nucleus of brothers Rich and Chris Robinson and in 1990 issued their debut album Shake Your Money Maker. Buoyed by the bluesy swagger and mid-70's Stones-isms of the singles ‘Twice As Hard', ‘Jealous Again', ‘Hard To Handle' and ‘She Talks to Angels' the album went on to sell over 3 million copies. The following year - the band issued The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion. The album landed straight at #1 on the US album chart - alongside a #6 debut in Australia, with the singles ‘Remedy', ‘Sting Me' and ‘Thorn In My Pride' securing the enduring legacy of the band. The Amorica album followed in 1994 and Three Snakes and One Charm in 1996, each Top 20 US albums. 1999's By Your Side rounded out their American recordings era.
