Ray Manzarek has always been the better half of The Doors. Old Jim Morrison gets most of the credit, as front men often do, but at the end of the day he was just another kid with poetic pretensions who liked to get a little too fucked up. So I guess if The Doors were actual doors that would make Morrison the thick, heavy part you can’t see through, and Manzarek would be more like the hinges; the part that makes the whole thing move. The fact that he has teamed up with legendary guitar player Roy Rogers might explain why Translucent Blues has a very familiar air about it – In a good way. These aren’t songs you’ve likely heard before, but something inside might tell you otherwise. All of the tracks are well thought out and take their time in exploring (predominantly blues-type) themes, ranging from Boogie-Woogie to Dirty Delta, with the occasional roots rock track insinuating itself into the mix for good measure. “Kick” just confirms my suspicions that the saxophone is in fact the sexiest instrument. George Brooks wails on the tenor sax, steals the spotlight. This track is carried by its flirtatious melody and complimented by its dirty, dog-house lyrics. “Blues in My Shoes” is another gem with catchy, silly, simple lyrics that manage to avoid being campy, while “New Dodge City” is about as close as it gets to classic Doors, stylistically and content wise. It’s got the same 4/4 swing beat with generous cymbals on the one, and lyrics that sound as though they were written by Ken Keasey and sung by someone a little too frightening to get work on the lounge circuit (It’s hard to tell but to be sure, that’s a compliment). If you make up your mind about Translucent Blues after only hearing two tracks, please let “As You Leave” be one of them. The other could be chosen pretty much at random, and right there in those two songs you’d have an adequate cross-section of this album to go by. “As You Leave” is a down-tempo, brooding instrumental, a bit of a departure from the overall tone of the album which is largely upbeat. However, it is not to be missed. If there are indeed only two kinds of blues, the kind that make you feel better for yourself or the kind that make you feel worse for someone else, this album would definitely be of the former category. Pick it up and give it a spin. You’ll figure out sooner than later if it was worth it.
