For many people Robert Calvert was Captain Lockheed. Captain Lockheed and The Starfighters was the title of Robert Calvert’s debut solo album in 1974. Of course prior to that Robert had been a member of the ultimate “Space Rock” band Hawkwind. Robert Calvert would spend his time in and out of Hawkwind during the seventies and also record his first two solo albums (Captain Lockheed and The Starfighters and Lucky Leif and The Longships) Following an album and tour as The Hawklords, Robert Calvert once again departed Hawkwind for a solo career which would continue through the eighties until his death in 1988. Despite leaving Hawkwind in the late seventies there was always the hope that Calvert and the band with which he is most associated with would get together once more to weave their very special magic. The Brock Calvert Project is what many fans have long hoped for in that it combines Robert Calvert’s poetry and prose with the music of Dave Brock something that worked incredibly well and with such spectacular effects on albums like In Search Of Space and the ultimate Space Rock album Space Ritual. Originally released in mid 2007 The Brock Calvert Project as it became known, married recitations of Robert Calvert to music provided by the then current line up of Hawkwind. As an artistic statement the marriage was a good one and of course Calvert’s work with Hawkwind was always highly regarded. Tracks include First landing on Medusa, The Naked and Transparent Man Gives Thanks, Locked In and Small Boy (The Swing) Unavailable for some time the demand for this album remains high and the album will be of interest to fans of both Hawkwind and also of Robert Calvert who has also attracted a cult following which has become larger in the years since his death. The consistent high profile of Hawkwind also ensures a ready made and sizeable audience for whom this release will have enormous significance.
