Editorial Reviews:

So how do you improve a substandard live album by a major artist? How about by making it shorter? That's the novel approach the Smith Music Group have taken to Willie Nelson's installment in their Live At Billy Bob's Texas series; originally released in 2004, the album captured Willie and his band on what can be charitably called an off night, with more than a few instrumental flubs, bum notes and flat harmonies along the way, but what really sank this particular ship was the recording and mix, which put Nelson's out of tune acoustic guitar way in the front and reduced everything else to an afterthought. If SMG felt the need to upgrade the album, a trip back to the studio to remix the audio would have made sense, but instead they've chosen to reissue the set with the song selection cut roughly in half, featuring eleven of the twenty tunes appearing on the original release. Even more remarkably, rather than picking and choosing among the tracks, SMG simply lopped off the second half of the set, which means these eleven tracks include one instrumental showcase for pianist Bobbie Nelson and a cover of Merle Haggard's "Working Man's Blues" lackadaisically sung by guitarist Jody Payne. The album runs less than 32 minutes, especially galling given the marathon length of a typical Willie Nelson concert, and while it's hard to imagine anyone wanting to hear a full two or three hour show from a band sounding as ragged as Willie and company do here, shortening the album solves none of its problems. This edition also comes with a bonus DVD, which features the same half of the concert, and while the video's sound mix is a bit less grating than that on the CD, this show isn't a lot more fun to watch than it is to listen to. Quite simply, this was a curiously awful album from one of America's best live performers in its original form, and its edited overhaul leaves it just as difficult to enjoy; dig out your old copy of Willie and Family Live and give that a spin instead. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide
