By the early 1920s, urban blues performers had solidified the standard three-line 12-bar blues structure. Fortunately, during the same time, recordings were made of rural musicians who grew up with the blues, and whose formal approaches were more fluid and improvisational. The blues revival of the early 1960s brought many of these survivors to the forefront of traditional music.
