Captured live on three separate American TV programs in the 60's, this rare footage features Herman along with his legendary "Band That Plays The Blues," swinging away in these riveting performances.

A gifted clarinetist and alto saxophonist, Woody Herman's (1913-1987) true genius lay in his ability to create group chemistry, and exploit the talents of each of his players to their fullest.

With a resume that speaks for itself, Herman directed some of the greatest big band in jazz history during his fifty-year musical career. He worked tirelessly to keep his bands from sounding stale, allowing them to evolve with the various movements in jazz, while maintaining their high-octane energy level at its peak.

With the success of his groundbreaking 1939 recording "At the Woodchoppers' Ball," Herman put together his first legendary band that was known as "the Band That Plays the Blues." This outstanding orchestra met with a resounding and long-lasting success seldom seen in jazz.

Legendary musicians such as Oscar Pettiford, Stan Getz, Shelly Manne, Zoot Sims, Shorty Rogers and Gene Ammons all passed through this band, at one point in their illustrious career.
