JE CHANTERAI POUR TOI - “I’ll Sing for you”, a film by French film maker Jacques Sarasin, is about the life and music of the Malian bluesman Boubacar Traoré, known to his fellow countrymen as “Kar Kar”. It is based on the story of Kar Kar’s life contained in the book “Mali Blues” by Lieve Joris, but is a different and exceptional odyssey through the geography both of a country and of the human soul.
In the sixties, the people of Mali awoke each morning to the sound of Boubacar "Kar Kar" Traoré's voice on the radio, singing of independence of its country. On its twentieth Kar Kar became the personalisation of the new, independent Mali. Everyone in Mali knows his music and remembers having danced to his hits. But since his music was only played on the radio, he didn't earn enough money to live on and he had to stop playing music to work as a tailor and a salesman to maintain his family.
A few years later destiny strikes. His beloved wife, Pierrette dies. Disoriented, Kar Kar leaves France, works in construction, and sings at weekends in the Parisian immigrant shelters that are now his home. In Mali, everybody thinks that KarKar is dead.
With a generous serving of music, fantastic black and white photos and newsreels, and vibrantly filmed footage of modern-day Mali, director Jacques Sarasin tracks Traoré's journey in this hypnotically beautiful film.
