A Gothic metal band from Finland, Before the Dawn was originally conceived in 1999 as a solo project for lead singer Tuomas Saukkonen, but expanded to include a full band. This notably included the additional vocals of Panu Willman, whose more melodic, clean vocals--though still metal-sounding--perfectly complement Tuomas's dark growl. The band's debut EP GEHENNA garnered many accolades, and the 2003 album MY DARKNESS solidified their place on the map. The sound ranged from brooding, melodic death metal, to the relatively upbeat "Human Hatred," presenting a welcome, refreshing album that seemed highly original, despite guitar work reminiscent of Katatonia. Here, the quintet is shown in full effect at the Night of the Arts in Lathi in 2003, with plenty of concert and backstage footage, as well as the Tuska Open Air After Party.
